Division on Career Development and Transition (DCDT) International Conference 2025

Poster Presentation: This poster introduces the content of a free curriculum to prepare students to understand and advocate for their own accommodations (including assistive technology) in postsecondary settings. Funded by NIDILRR through the Great Lakes ADA Center, the curriculum is based on a researched set of quality indicators for assistive technology in postsecondary education [Gould et al, 2022, Self-Determination and Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology in Postsecondary Education, Journal of Postsecondary Education & Disability, 35(1), 45-80.]. The curriculum is targeted to high school and transition students who will attend some type of postsecondary education or training. It contextualizes assistive technology self-determination under the umbrella of career exploration and postsecondary accommodation planning. After setting career goals and analyzing the task demands of a potential career, students will learn how accommodations work, how to assess the effectiveness of accommodations, how laws and context affect the transition of accommodations from K12 to postsecondary settings, how to explore assistive technology, and how to self-advocate for accommodations. A full prototype of the curriculum (8 units of content with about 100 short lessons) is now available through a dedicated website. We are actively seeking participants to join the pilot study.
